The iBT TOEFL has four different sections.
The Reading and Listening are passive skills sections, meaning that a student doesn’t have to actively put words together, only understand the passages. Students can improve these two skills by practicing them in their own time.
The Reading Section: Here you will answer questions from three different passages, you will have 60 minutes to read all the passages and answer all the questions. By pressing next you can move on to the next question, by pressing return you can return to previous questions. At any time you can review the completed and uncompleted questions on the review screen.
The listening section: Here you will answer questions from two listing passages and four lectures. In this part of the test, you will put on a headset. After you have listened to each conversation and lecture, you will answer questions regarding the main ideas, supporting details and the speaker’s purpose or attitude towards the topic. In this part of the test, you will be able to take notes.
The Speaking and Writing are active skills, a student has to be able put thoughts and ideas together and express them in logical way. These two sections are very difficult to improve without the support of a native instructor.
The speaking section: Here you will answer six questions. Two of these questions will be based on your own experience, the other questions will be based on lectures you have listened to and reading passages you have read.
Questions one and two, you will speak about personal experiences and opinions. You will need to speak clearly and coherently. Quickly indicate your preference or opinion quickly and give your supporting reasons why.
Questions three and four, you will be required to read a short text followed by listening to a talk on the same topic. You would then answer questions based on information you have read and listen to. You will need to understand the main idea of the Reading as well as the listening. You will be scored on how accurately and coherently you convey the information you have heard.
Questions five and six, you listen to a conversation or a lecture. He would then answer a question on what you have heard. In this section, you will also be able to use a pen and paper to take notes and prepare your responses.
The writing section: Here you will only answer two questions. The first question is called the integrated question and the second the independent question.
The integrated question asks you to write about the relationship between a lecture you have listened to and a passage you have read. In this part of the writing section, you will have 20 minutes to prepare a written response. You will have to include the relevant information in both the lecture and reading passage. You are not required to state your personal opinion, just present the information you have read and listen to and to convey how both passages are related
The independent question asks you to write an essay about a topic of general interest based on your experience. In this part, you will need to state, explain and support an opinion on a topic. Here you will have 30 minutes to plan, write, and revise your essay.
